Reduce Waste and Litter-
Recycle Your Balloons!

How can people celebrate with balloons
AND protect the environment?

The answer is a never-before option to pop-and-drop balloons in a designated recycling bin. For every balloon purchased, our mission is to dispose of and re-purpose it responsibly. Become part of the solution and join Clean Virginia Waterways and Balloon Mission and let’s recycle 1,000,000 balloons by 2028.

Balloons are often used for decorations, celebrations and memorials. Helium-filled balloons that are released into the environment can cause litter that is harmful to wildlife, power outages and even wildfires from hitting powerlines. In Virginia, it is illegal to intentionally release balloons, resulting in a $25 per balloon fine. CVW’s Balloon Recycling Program serves three purposes: it creates awareness about the environmental harm caused by balloon releases and the associated law; it provides an option for properly disposing of and recycling balloons, giving people, especially children, a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship; and reduces the amount of this type of harmful litter reaching the environment, leading to cleaner waterways, beaches and communities. Clean Virginia Waterways has a “Balloon Mission”: Recycle 1,000,000 balloons by the end of 2028.
Can you help us?
We need donors and sponsors to help us purchase bins and shipping boxes so we can make balloon recycling available in locations around Virginia. $600 will provide a Balloon Collection Bin, TerraCycle shipping box and custom sign for a school, library, children’s museum, etc. You can also sponsor a Balloon Collection Kit to place in your own place of business.
