Title: Clean Virginia Waterways Board Member

Organization Description: The mission of Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW) is to enhance the health of Virginia’s waterways through collaborative leadership, plastic pollution and marine debris prevention, and advocacy for a sustainable future. Founded in 1995, CVW is an independent, statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is affiliated with the Ocean Conservancy. CVW has organized the International Coastal Cleanup in Virginia since 1995 and is recognized as a leader in researching marine debris, including its sources, impacts and solutions. CVW focuses on prevention of land-based litter through education, collaboration, research, advocacy, engaging the public in hands-on stewardship through cleanup events, and conducting social marketing research and campaigns.

Position Description:

CVW has a current Board of Directors consisting of three members. CVW is expanding its Board of Directors in 2026.  CVW is searching for ambassadors who will provide foresight, focus on mission advancement, community impact, & direct fundraising support while guiding the organization toward its mission & future success.  

As a CVW Board member, you will play a vital role in supporting CVW’s mission with:  

  • Governance & Strategy: Working with leadership to establish mission/vision, set strategic plans, oversee policies, ensure legal/ethical integrity, serve on Committees & attend & actively participate in board & committee meetings.

  • Advocacy & Fundraising Leverage networks for resources & donors, contribute financially, participate in event & fundraising planning, attend & host fundraisers.

  • Stewardship: Acting as ambassadors & advocates for the organization within the communities of Virginia. 

  • Financial Oversight: Ensure adequate resources, review financial statements, approve budgets, & protect assets.

  • Leadership & Oversight: Hire, support & evaluate the Executive Director & guide senior management.

  • Fiduciary Duties: Exercise duty of care, loyalty, & discretion, disclosing conflicts of interest, ensure the organization adheres to its mission, bylaws, & all applicable laws & regulations while always acting in the organization's best interest

  • Research: Identify potential funding opportunities, conduct donor research & review grant applications. 

  • Social Media: Share social media regarding fundraising, news articles & important information directly shared by CVW.

Qualifications:  

  • Possess a deep passion for CVW’s mission, high integrity, and a commitment to active participation, including attending meetings and assisting with fundraising.

  • Providing expertise & independent judgment regarding marine debris & plastic pollution issues is required.  

  • Strong community reputation and ability to foster relationships, along with high ethical standards.

  • Ability to attend quarterly Board meetings & advise leadership regularly.

  • Strong communication skills & comfort speaking with potential donors,  sponsors, & business owners.

  • Ability to think strategically, work effectively in a team, and act as an ambassador for the organization.

  • Must be 18+ years old.

  • Strategic expertise in either law, human resources, fundraising, marketing, strategic planning, or technology to support governance and fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Must be willing to make an annual financial commitment to Clean Virginia Waterways with any amount you are comfortable with. 

Duration & Schedule: 

This is a volunteer role with two year terms.  The schedule is flexible. The position will begin upon acceptance by the Current Board.
